- The feature is included in iOS apps like Point of Sale, Retail, and Appointments.
- Sellers open the app, add the transaction, and buyers complete payment by tapping their contactless method.
Square has rolled out its Tap to Pay feature on iPhone in Canada, extending its functionality to Square sellers across the country. This move positions Square as one of the first businesses in Canada to introduce this technology, allowing sellers to accept contactless payments directly from their iPhones without the need for additional hardware or payment terminals.
The service, integrated into Square’s iOS apps such as Square Point of Sale, Square for Retail, and Square Appointments, comes at no extra cost, presenting itself as a cost-effective option for entrepreneurs.
Simplifying In-Person Transactions
Through Tap to Pay on iPhone, Square aims to streamline in-person commerce for both new and established businesses. Any Square merchant equipped with a compatible iPhone can accept contactless payments by simply initiating the Square app, adding the transaction, and presenting their iPhone to the buyer. Buyers complete the transaction by tapping their contactless payment method near the seller’s iPhone.
Apple’s Tap to Pay on iPhone technology leverages the iPhone’s built-in features to ensure the privacy and security of businesses’ and customers’ data. Notably, Apple does not store card numbers on the device or its servers during the payment process.

Expanding Business Opportunities
This rollout in Canada follows previous launches in the United States, Australia, and the United Kingdom, where Tap to Pay on iPhone has been embraced by a diverse range of sellers, including mobile professionals, retailers, and hairstylists, for its ability to facilitate secure and efficient transactions without additional hardware.
“With Tap to Pay on iPhone, we are further levelling the playing field for businesses of all sizes to be able to start, run and grow,” said Saumil Mehta, Head of Product at Square.
“The Canadian business landscape is competitive and tech savvy, always on the lookout for solutions that can make operating their business more efficient. Tap To Pay on iPhone helps reduce some of the barriers to entry for new businesses, and enables existing sellers to create new ways to sell with nothing more than their iPhone and Square’s software. They can get set up in minutes and begin making sales in seconds.”
